ADAPTOGENS , 1 Comment

These days it seems like we’re all looking for balance. Although many people are learning the benefits of unwinding in a  healthy way, (practicing yoga, meditating, drinking calming tea, or taking a bath) it’s still hard for most of us to be able to completely and fully relax. As soon as we get close to finding some zen, we have to wind back up! Enter caffeine and sugar— our go-tos for a quick boost.

To move through the day feeling “energized” we need periodic spikes in caffeine or sugar until we can unwind again. As we all know, these two can leave us feeling even more tired and irritable when the inevitable crash hits. Doesn’t sound very balanced at all, does it? Fortunately, there IS another way. Adaptogens are herbal ingredients found in roots and plant parts used to reduce stress and fatigue. Specifically, adaptogens improve the health of the body’s adrenal system, which manages your body’s hormonal response to stress.

The term adaptogen was coined in 1947 by Russian scientist Nikolai Lazarev to describe the unique action of a substance that demonstrates an enhancement of the body’s ability to resist a stressor. Essentially, they adapt to your body’s specific needs to help you cope with anxiety and fatigue in a natural, BALANCED way. They can normalize your body’s imbalances without overstimulating (by helping your cells access more oxygen and eliminating toxins)—which means you’ll get through the day without all of those peaks and valleys, and when you’re ready to decompress, you’ll sail just as smoothly into savasana.

(Which Adaptogenic herbs you take depends on what your body needs, but we prefer combination formulas that include Asian Ginseng, Ashwagandha root, Rhodiola, and Eleuthero. Consult your doctor before taking any herbs.)
